“An environmental prosecutor ordered the seizure of 16 animals – nine tigers and seven lions abandoned by a circus in Paraguay while an NGO started a campaign to buy them and keep them in the zoo in Asuncion.”

“Brigitte Fuzellier, head of the NGO Pro International Investment, Trade and Environment, said he agreed with the mayor of Assumption building makeshift cages at the zoo before the final building to house cats.”

Un circo argentino dejó abandonados a 9 tigres y 7 leones

“Una fiscal del ambiente ordenó el decomiso de 16 animales de la selva –nueve tigres y siete leones– abandonados en Paraguay por un circo argentino, mientras responsables de una ONG comenzaron una campaña para comprarlos y conservarlos en el zoológico de Asunción”.

“Estos animales no se van a quedar en Paraguay. Van a volver a su hábitat”, dijo en forma tajante la fiscal del ambiente Bernarda Alvarez al justificar el decomiso.”

“Sin embargo, Brigitte Fuzellier, responsable de la ONG Organización Internacional Pro Inversión, Comercio y Medio Ambiente, dijo haber acordado con el intendente (alcalde) de Asunción la construcción de unas jaulas provisorias en el zoológico antes de edificar las definitivas para alojar a los felinos.”

Habitat: Forests, Swamps, Dry Woodland and Grasslands

About:
The Jaguar is the third largest feline, the tiger and lion being the only ones larger. Typically females are 20% smaller than males and they generally vary in size according to their distribution, they tend to increase in size from North to South. The Jaguar is compact and well muscled. It has short stocky limbs which enables it to be adept at climbing, swimming and crouching. It has a strong head and an extremely powerful jaw.

Predators and Threats:
Due to the large size and dominant nature of the Jaguar, there are no other wild animals that are known to actually consider it as prey. Once found throughout the South American continent, they have been hunted by Humans mainly for their fur which has led to drastic declines in Jaguar population numbers everywhere. Despite now having legal protection and a reduction in the hunting of them for their fur, the Jaguar is at increasing risk from loss of habitat mainly in the form of deforestation to make way for agriculture or growing Human settlements, which means these large and majestic animals are being pushed into more remote regions of their native range.
