On the afternoon of 19th April 2013, I communicated with my Vet friend Dr Tony Sumampau, head Vet and Head of Zoos and Aquaria in Indonesia, regarding the horrific photographs of the emaciated Tigress from Surabaya Zoo. The Tigress name is Melani and she is 15 years old. Melani has suffered digestive problems at Surabaya for the last 5 years due to being fed meat tainted with chemicals and pestisides over the years. Although the meat supplier was changed 3 years ago, Melani was a hopeless case with her internal digestive system destroyed. She is now on the brink of death unable to digest any food at all and euthanisation is a possibility. The situation at Surabaya Zoo is being addressed, however there is still a long way to go, due to the continuing human conflict elements.
Melani is in a tragic state today, she is yet to be euthanised because of all the negative press going on. I can tell you that she is suffering immensely. What is the humane thing to do? Quite honestly, hearing from Tony that she is in such a dire condition and in alot of pain, the humane thing to do is to release her from this pain.
If this is to happen, it is terribly sad, however humane.
But we must not think that this situation is taken care of, because it is far from over. Melani is a victim of human mismanagement, ego, short cuts and neglect. She will die because of this. However, I personally do not want her to suffer until her body gives out, that is too much pain. In her case, euthanisation is humane.
The Surabaya Zoo is notorious for the high horrific deaths of their animals. The internal conflict at Surabaya Zoo must stop. Every single way that you can think of the stop the ongoing long term abuse of the Surabaya Zoo animals has been tried from within Indonesia, including Veterinary recommendations, Zoologists, Scientists, Animal Welfare orgs, negotiations with the Surabaya Government, absolute everything has been tried and still this goes on.
We need to try to bring the world pressure on this situation to make it stop. Please keep signing and sharing everywhere. These animals cannot wait any longer.Lets help put the pressure on the Surabaya Government to urge the end to this ongoing suffering.
