Two hundred and fifty tigers, 2,000 leopards, 5,000 otters, 20,000 wild cats, 20,000 wild foxes and still counting. That’s the unbelievable and shocking number of wild animals that law enforcers have been able to count as falling prey to the deadly trade plied by Sansar Chand- also called “the Veerapan of North India”.
Chand is said to be single-handedly responsible for the missing tigers of the Sariska wildlife sanctuary in Rajasthan- his brother, also involved in numerous cases of poaching that ultimately led to the Sariska Tiger Reserve being cleaned off the big cat, was arrested by state forest officials in 2009.
Even his wife Rani, was convicted in 2012 for illegal wildlife trade, and sentenced to seven years in prison. This is only the second time that maximum punishment under the Wildlife Protection Act has been given in Indian history. Rani and others in his family had been spearheading the wildlife trade in northern India.
Sansar Chand has been in jail since 2005, but due to faulty investigation, inconclusive evidences and his ability to fool the cops, he could soon be walking free.
God bless the wildlife of India. Sansar Chand could be out already this weekend. We cannot let this happen.
