It was a shocking Saturday for residents of a building in Vasai when they saw a leopard preying on a stray dog near the compound. This is the first time a wild cat has been spotted in a residential area in Vasai.
Committee members of the building, Evershine Gardens, have sent a letter to the civic body’s fire brigade department, highlighting the residents’ fear and calling for safety measures.
Residents spotted the leopard from their windows in the afternoon. When they started yelling, the cat disappeared in the dense jungle on the salt pan land behind the building.
Building secretary Ajay Morkar said, “Civic officials surveyed the area but could not locate the cat. We have informed the forest officials too. We have advised the residents to avoid going out of the compound at night and, if they must, then to carry torches. We have told them to make sure children don’t venture out of the compound after dark,” Morkar added.
There are a lot of stray dogs in and around the building compound who are fed by the residents, he said.
“Leftovers and unhealthy surroundings attract the wild cats.
We have requested the residents not to feed the strays,” Morkar said.
Forest officer, Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary, RN Jejurkar said, “We will conduct a survey. We will also guide them in taking the necessary measures to avoid any untoward incident.”
