If you want to see a tiger in the wild, Ranthambore is considered one of the best places in the world to see a one. The most commonly seen animals in the park are spotted deer, sambar deer and monkeys.
There are, however, more exotic animals such as Caracals, sloth bears and hyenas. Still, the crown jewels of the park, and the animals most visitors hope to see on safari, are the tigers ! Driving through the sparse woods along lakes and passing tall grasslands, the excitement of seeing deer and monkeys gradually wears off as they become routine. When a tiger is spotted, however, almost all vehicles in the area head to the spot with everyone pulling out binoculars and cameras. Sometimes, the tigers, which are used to the human attention, stare back curiously, but at other times, they are too busy stalking or patrolling their territory or taking a nap.
Tigers of Ranthambhore are used to vehicles and hence remain oblivious to human presence. This image from our archives.
